Andy stopped by today.
The top of the Flattops is open meadows and parks. And stands of aspens and evergreens.
Flat basically. But also rolling. With a slight tilt to the South.
I skirt one patch of aspens. And then another. No evergreens anywhere close by yet. So I just keep headin’ West-Northwest.
Finally, I see a good dense grove of evergreens. What looks to be about half mile ahead. I’ve put in enough time and covered a good deal of distance for the evening. Looks like decent cover against the rain.
And it does rain up here. With a strong wind the rain can hurt. Even through your clothes it stings.
And lightning. The lightning up here gets really scary. There’s nowhere to hide. You’re exposed.
The sky right now looks very favorable. But that also means chillier than if there were cloud cover.
Well, ya can’t have everything. I’ll definitely take no rain.
I get to the evergreens. They look promising for makin’ a decent bed and creatin’ some foliage blanket. You know, pine boughs cut up and laid on top of you.
I don’t get real choosy about a particular spot. The first one that’ll do gets me for company for the night.
With enough boughs for softness and a few more for cover, I make fast work of crashin’ out. Been a long day.
I will reach the Meadows tomorrow.
And my little buddy.
That “cotton-picker” better be there. Or I’ll know the reason why.
I think of him and the times we’ve had. And I get a little nostalgic.
