So, we’re eating lunch, and I look up and see 3 bodies comin’ down the road. I can’t quite make them out at first. Then I see the tell-tale Cavalry hats.
Some more of Wilson’s Army. But, I don’t recognize them.
Wilson does. Says they’re 1st Platoon. Led by Master Sargent White. Part of the General’s guard.
At last, “some word” from the General. Sorta.
The men are draggin’. Bad. They’re exhausted.
Heads are barely being held up.
Wilson and I run out to meet them. We grab their packs. The Sgt Major just keeps on walkin’ past us, towards the lodge. 1st Platoon is on his heels. Wilson and I do a 180 so as not to impede the men.
Wilson asks the Sgt Major about the General, “The General?” “The rest of ‘em?”
It’s all the Sgt Major can do to muster up a heads “up-n-down” twice. Then his head goes limp again against his chest. They walk past the picnic bench full of lunch.
They see a cabin ahead.
Wilson and I run ahead and rush in to get 3 bunks ready. We know they just wanna crash.
No sooner do we get the beds turned down but they’re right behind us.
No words are spoken.
The men claim a bunk and “die” in it. (figuratively)
Wilson and I exit and turn to look at each other.
What about the General?
We look down the road . . .
